At our most recent Trusted Tech Talk on Building High-Performance Engineering Teams, we welcomed tech leaders, engineers, and delivery specialists from across the UK to share best practices, challenges, and insights on creating scalable and effective tech teams.

One of the most popular questions raised during our Q&A session was: What is a Scrum of Scrums, and when should you use it?

It's a great question, and one we hear often from scaling organisations looking to maintain Agile delivery while expanding their teams.

Understanding the Scrum of Scrums

A Scrum of Scrums is a scaled Agile coordination method that helps manage and align multiple Scrum teams working on the same product or project. Think of it as a “meta-Scrum” – a meeting of representatives from each Scrum team designed to address inter-team dependencies and integration challenges.

Instead of involving every team member, each Scrum team selects a representative (often the Scrum Master or someone directly involved with cross-team coordination) to attend the Scrum of Scrums meeting. This representative shares updates, blockers, and progress on behalf of their team, and brings back any insights or actions to their respective teams.

When Should You Use a Scrum of Scrums?

Scrum of Scrums is typically used when:

  • You have 3 or more Scrum teams working in parallel.
  • You're building a large, complex system with interdependent components.
  • There's a need for consistent coordination across multiple delivery streams.
  • You want to maintain Agile principles at scale without losing visibility or speed.

This approach is especially useful in SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), LeSS (Large-Scale Scrum), and other enterprise Agile models.

What Does a Scrum of Scrums Meeting Cover?

The format is flexible but often includes:

  • Progress updates from each team.
  • Risks or blockers affecting other teams.
  • Upcoming dependencies and shared goals.
  • Coordination of cross-team deliverables.

Some organisations run these meetings daily, others 2–3 times a week, depending on the pace of delivery.

Why It Matters

As companies scale, communication breakdowns and misalignment between teams become more common. A Scrum of Scrums enables early detection of risks, promotes continuous alignment, and fosters collaboration across silos – helping engineering teams stay nimble, even at scale.
