At our latest Trusted Tech Talk, one question struck a chord across the room:

“You mentioned the emotional toll on people constantly retraining because of AI; have you taken any steps that help people cope with the pace?”

It’s a question that takes the AI conversation beyond tools and technology — and into something far more important: people.

As AI continues to reshape roles, skills, and entire industries, the expectation to constantly adapt has become the new normal. But with that comes pressure — and, for many, fatigue.

The Reality: Continuous Learning Has a Cost

There’s no denying the opportunity AI presents. It enables faster output, smarter decisions, and entirely new ways of working. But it also introduces a relentless pace of change.

For some professionals, this is energising. For others, it can feel overwhelming. The pressure to stay relevant, learn new tools, and anticipate what’s next can quickly become exhausting — especially when it sits alongside the demands of a full-time role.

What we’re seeing isn’t a lack of willingness to learn. It’s a growing strain on people’s capacity to keep up.

What We’re Seeing Across the Market

Through our conversations with both clients and candidates, one theme comes up time and again: the emotional impact of AI-driven change is real.

Interestingly, the individuals and teams that are thriving aren’t necessarily those doing the most learning. They’re the ones working in environments where learning is supported, prioritised, and made sustainable.

Likewise, the organisations getting the most out of AI aren’t just investing in tools — they’re investing in the experience of the people expected to use them.

What Actually Makes a Difference

The most effective organisations aren’t removing the need to learn — that’s impossible. Instead, they’re changing how learning fits into the day-to-day experience of work.

Rather than expecting employees to upskill on top of everything else, they’re building it into the role itself. Time is being carved out during the working week to focus on development, reducing the need for people to constantly “catch up” in their own time.

There’s also a growing recognition that clarity matters just as much as access. Instead of overwhelming teams with endless tools and courses, the best leaders are helping people focus on what actually matters — guiding them towards the skills that will have the biggest impact.

Equally important is the environment. Teams that feel safe to ask questions, experiment, and even get things wrong are far more likely to engage with change in a positive way. Without that psychological safety, learning quickly becomes a source of pressure rather than progress.

From Expectation to Enablement

One of the biggest shifts we’re seeing is in ownership.

Upskilling is no longer viewed as something individuals must manage alone. Instead, it’s becoming a shared responsibility between employee and employer.

Forward-thinking organisations are asking different questions. Not just “Are our people keeping up?” but “Are we giving them the space, clarity, and support to do so?”

This shift from expectation to enablement is critical. Without it, even the most capable individuals will struggle to sustain performance over time.

AI Is a Cultural Shift, Not Just a Technical One

It’s easy to focus on what AI can do. But the real challenge lies in how people experience the change it brings.

AI may increase speed and efficiency, but it doesn’t remove the need for human judgement, creativity, or resilience. In fact, it places more emphasis on them.

The organisations that will succeed in this next phase won’t just be the ones that adopt AI the fastest. They’ll be the ones that support their people through the transition most effectively.

Because ultimately, AI doesn’t replace people — but it does change what’s required of them.
